With my first baby I didn’t really baby wear, I tried it but my son was overly squirmy and it wasn’t really a necessity at the time. With my second baby I wore him fairly often, I needed free hands to chase his big brother around and it made running errands easier. With baby number three I’ve been wearing here since we got home from the hospital. I have three kids and I only have two arms so it is an absolute necessity to baby wear now. Luckily, Baby Audrey loves being worn in every and any carrier and she pretty much sleeps the entire time I’m wearing her.
Since I wear my baby on a daily basis I have been wanting to try out different types of carriers so I could find one (or two or four) that we really loved and that I could recommend to other mamas. If you’re not sure that baby wearing is for you, here’s a few reasons why you need to at least try it out.
3 Reasons to Wear Your Baby
1. Babywearing frees up your arms.
There is no way I could run errands efficiently and with some sanity intact without wearing one of my three children, especially with my three kids being four-years-old and under. When baby is properly wrapped up or placed into a carrier, she is secure and I don’t need to keep an arm or hand on her at all, freeing up both of my arms for wrangling her older brothers and/or for loading up a grocery cart.
2. Babywearing calms your baby.
Does your baby have reflux or just doesn’t like to be put down? Studies show that babies who received “supplemental carrying” around 6 weeks of age cried and fussed 43% less than babies who were carried a more normal amount (AKA not regularly worn in a carrier). Part of the reason that wearing your baby keeps her calm is because the carrier makes baby feel like she is still in the womb, she hears your heartbeat, feels your movements, and hears your sounds, just like she would have in the womb.
3. babywearing stops strangers from touching baby...most of the time.
If baby is snuggled in nice and close to you it will keep people from touching baby with their germy hands. Although every once in awhile you will get that random stranger who isn’t afraid to get their hands on baby even though she is tucked in close to your chest…#awkward.
There are practically a countless number of reasons to wear your baby but those are my three favorite reasons. Now that you are convinced to try babywearing for yourself, let’s talk about how to wear your baby.
Types of Baby Carriers
There are three main types of carriers, a ring sling, a wrap, and a soft structured carrier; there are a whole bunch of different “sub-categories” of carriers (such as a stretchy wrap, woven wrap, or mesh wrap) but they are all based off those three types.
Pros of different types of carriers
Soft Structured Carriers
- extremely easy to use
- provides a bit more support to baby’s head/neck/back
- comfortable to wear
- one-shoulder strap makes it easy to take on and off
- can fit a newborn or a toddler
- comfortable and pouch-like for baby
- fabric spreads evenly across your back, distributing the weight evenly across your back and shoulders
- easy to keep newborns snuggled in close
- multiple ways to wear it
To help you figure out what type of wrap is best for you and your baby, I tried out four different types of baby carriers just for you. (You’re welcome).
Tuck and Bundle Baby Wrap
in lavender grey
Highlights: lightweight and breathable which makes it great for baby wearing in the summer, Veteran-owned company, priced under $100, it’s great for newborns and baby can be worn in it up to 25 lbs, shipping packaging is beautiful.
I am most familiar with baby wraps, specifically stretchy wraps. Tuck and Bundle wraps are a little different because there isn’t much stretch to them so I did have a little trouble figuring out how to wrap it snug since it didn’t stretch like the other wraps I am used to. Once you figure out how to get it wrapped (Tuck and Bundle does send you a link for a helpful tutorial) you will love how lightweight this wrap is, no more worrying that baby is going to overheat while being worn in the summer months. I love wearing this wrap when we are doing things outside since it has been so hot and humid in Pennsylvania this summer, I don’t feel like I sweat extra from the wrap and one time I even forgot I was wearing Baby Audrey because she was asleep and snuggled into the Tuck and Bundle wrap which is so light that you barely notice it!

Chekoh Ring Sling
Highlights: Doesn’t pull on your back or shoulders as much as a wrap might, easy to use once threaded, looks beautiful, beautiful shipping packaging, Chekoh offers a 1-on-1 video consultation with an in-house babywearing educator, endorsed by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute
I was so excited when my Chekoh sling came in the mail, they are based in Australia and even with International shipping it didn’t take that long to get to me in the States. The box they shipped the wrap in is very high-quality and beautiful (not the cardboard shipping box, the box that was inside that one) and made me so excited to open it. The sling itself is absolutely beautiful, the color is amazing (Chekoh chose the color for me) and I am seriously in love with the color and the sling. I struggled a little bit with learning how to thread the sling rings but that was probably just my postpartum brain, haha. But once it’s threaded, putting it on and taking it off is SO easy, it just takes a few pulls of the fabric to adjust the sling to your liking. I reach for this sling often because of how easy and quick it is to put on, there’s no fumbling or tieing so I can be off faster to chase after my older kids. I was worried that the sling would make my back hurt since I already have a lot of back issues and my left side is weaker than my right side but I was surprised at how evenly the weight is displaced on my back even though the sling sits on just one shoulder. A little bonus to the sling is that it looks super stylish.

Beachfront Baby Mesh Wrap
Highlights: sewn by work-at-home moms in Texas, breathable, can be worn in and out of water, offers both wraps and slings
Beachfront’s Mesh Wrap is a really unique product and it is perfect for summertime! The mesh wraps are made from performance athletic mesh so they are perfect getting wet or getting sweaty. If you wear it around water it dries quickly because of that athletic mesh so it’s not as finicky to care for as regular fabric wraps. I love wearing this wrap on hot days because the fabric is so breathable so it’s perfect for hot and humid days on the playground. Later this summer I will be taking it to the beach with me and I can’t wait, it’s going to make being on the beach with a 4-year-old, 2-year-old, and 3 ½-month-old much easier. See the photos below for how we tested it out while not at the beach.
Beachfront Baby also offers a few other styles of carriers and offers non-mesh carriers as well. Since the quality of the mesh wrap that I was given is so great, I’m sure they’re other products are equally as awesome.
If you have learned how to properly wrap any wrap carrier then you will have no problem wrapping the Beachfront Baby wrap. I was nervous that the mesh would be slippery, making it hard to wrap and hard to get baby into but it has just the right amount of stretch and it’s not too slippery!

Kinderpack Infant Size Soft Structured Baby Carrier
In Pineapple Paradise
Highlights: handcrafted in small batches in the US, offers carriers in sizes that can hold children up to preschool age, extremely comfortable to wear, doesn’t pull on your back
A friend in a mommy Facebook group recommended I try out a Kinderpack carrier as it is the only carry she enjoyed using with her daughter and I am so glad she recommended it to me! I’ve tried this style carrier in the past and found them to be uncomfortable and a bit stiff but when I put on the Kinderpack I was pleased to find that it is extremely soft and comfortable and sort of molds itself to your body and around baby. I wore this carrier to a children’s museum and I felt confident wearing my 9-week-old baby in it because she was snuggled into the carrier and the carrier doesn’t move at all once it’s on, no stretching or drooping at all. I could chase after my boys and hold onto them when they went boneless on me (I know ya’ll have been there too) and I didn’t have to keep a hand on Audrey as extra support. I highly recommend getting a Kinderpack, especially if you have multiple children because you can confidently hold baby 100% hands-free so you can be there for your other kids as well.
Kinderpack has kindly offered my readers a discount on a Kinderpack! Whaaaaaaaaat! For real! Use my affiliate code SystemsMama at checkout and receive $10 off of your order.* You will love all of the fun prints that Kinderpack offers and you will especially love that discount!
Price Point: ★★★★ (this is the priciest carrier I reviewed but it’s well-worth the cost, especially since they are handcrafted)

My hope is that you are now armed with knowledge about babywearing and have found a carrier (or two or three or four) to try out with your little babe. Share a photo of you wearing your little one on Instagram and use the tag #iamajoyfulhomemaker so I can check it out!
If you aren’t already a babywearer, I promise you will love it and so will baby. It really does help you bond and it calms baby down. As soon as I put Audrey in any of the carriers she falls asleep within 15 minutes. Luckily she’s not a fussy baby but her littlest big brother was and wearing him really did help with the fussing related to his reflux issues.
Don’t forget to comment below and let me know which carrier you would most like to try (if you haven’t tried it already!).
*to receive $10 off your order there must be a carrier in the order (not only accessories) and the code can only be used ONCE per customer.
