A Homemaker's Daily To Do List

I've been a full-time homemaker for going on two and a half years now and it's really been the last year that I've been striving to live intentionally, which includes doing everything I can to be the homemaker God desires for me to be. I've nailed down a list of items that if completed every day, will make your life as a homemaker so much easier. Before we dive into the tasks, let's talk about who and what is a homemaker.
What is a homemaker?
According to the Dictionary, a homemaker is "a person who manages the household of his or her own family." So if you are the primary person in your household who takes care of things like organizing the family calendar, taking care of the house, making meals, etc. then you are a homemaker. You don't have to be a full-time stay-at-home mom or wife to be considered a "homemaker," anyone who takes care of the home is a homemaker.
In multiple areas of the Bible, it is written that women are made to be helpers to men and we are made to manage the household. Titus 2:3-5 (KJV) says, "That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed" and Proverbs 31:27 says, "She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Completing the items on the daily to do list will help you become the homemaker God strives for you to be.

These are ten items I do my best to complete everyday to stay mostly sane. I don't always get every single one of these done and often my husband helps out with some of the cleaning when he gets home from work. I'm terrible at getting the dishes done. I think part of the reason is because I only ever worked in the food industry before becoming a mama and I can't even begin to calculate the hours I spent doing dishes. Ha. But when I do manage to get the dishes done to the point that the sink is clean, it makes a huge difference in the appearance of the house. I've now started to let William help with the dishes. He hands me the not super fragile dishes and non-sharp utensils and I put them away and then I hand him the washed off dirty dishes and he kind of throws them into the dishwasher, I don't expect my two-year-old to line the plates up perfectly and to be super gentle with everything. He usually just lays the dishes in the dishwasher and I go in and line them up nicely. It takes a little longer but he loves helping!
2. Wash, fold, & put away one load of laundry
Once you are all caught up on laundry, the best way to stay on track is to do a load a day. That includes washing them, drying them, folding them, and then putting them all away. It eliminates the need to fold a mountainous pile of laundry.
3. Sweep/vacuum floors
I don't know about your house but the floors of my house need swept like three times a day or else my house looks "crusty," as I like to say. If you get no other cleaning done, make sure the one you do get done is cleaning the floors, it will make a huge difference in the appearance of your home. 4. Wipe down kitchen & bathroom counters
This is essential to keeping your house clean and sanitary. And if you use a fresh scented cleaner or wipe to clean up the counters, it makes your whole home smell nice and fresh. 5. Make beds
Yeah, this is one I am really bad at. But when I do make the beds it makes the whole room look put together, even when it's not.
6. Pick up/declutter main living areas
My husband typically does this at night after William goes to bed and before we go up to bed. It only takes a few minutes to complete but it helps us start the next day fresh and organized.
7. That day's cleaning task

8. God time
A little while back I wrote a post called "Fitting Your Day in Around God Time (Instead of the Other Way Around." So often we (I'm including myself!!) forget about God time and push it to the end of the day, moments before we fall asleep. I encourage you to be intentional in including God time into your day and you will see a difference not only in the attitude of yourself but also in the attitude of everyone in your family and the over all atmosphere of your home. 9. Prepare dinner
William is one stubborn, picky eater so we are trying out some new tricks to get him to eat a more varied diet (i.e. not just yogurt and chicken nuggets) and one of the tricks is to eat dinner as a family and serve the food "family style." We also turn off the tv and computers and we don't even bring our food to the table. I've also started having William help me prepare dinner every night because in theory kids are more willing to eat food that they've made themselves (so far, it hasn't worked for us but he loves cooking with me so we shall continue this little tradition). By simply preparing dinner I am teaching William practical skills and dinner brings the family together.
10. Practice self-care
So many times I see moms completely forget about themselves. There's nothing wrong with putting your all into being a mama and a homemaker but you can't forget about yourself either! One of my favorite quotes is, "You can't pour from an empty cup." In other words, if you are drained and feeling burnt-out, you will not be able to speak into the lives of your family and friends. Self-care is important to schedule into your day and it can be as simple as do a face mask, make time to read, or take a cat nap.
