What To Take To a New Mom

It's always fun when you get to go visit a newborn and a new mom. Newborn cuddles are pretty much the best. You can show up with the normal gifts of an outfit for the baby and a meal for the family, and while those items are greatly appreciated, there's even more that a new mom would love to receive when you visit.

1. A meal

This is the stereotypical gift but it is much needed and appreciated. I know I plan on making a bunch of freezer meals before Baby Daniel arrives but the reality of it actually happening is pretty slim. Bring a meal that is comforting, delicious, not spicy, and always include a dessert. Yes, new moms want to eat healthily and get back in shape as soon as possible, but those first two weeks or so are all about surviving. After I had William all I wanted was comfort food and cake. Extra bonus if what you bring is freezable, sometimes new moms receive too many meals but being able to freeze them for later is just as good! And a double bonus if you bring breakfast for the next day, something as simple as juice and bagels will be loved.

Some recipe ideas for you: Peanut Butter Apple Pie Baked Oatmeal, Dairy-Free Blueberry Peach Baked Oatmeal, Baked Potato Casserole, Enchilada Chicken Bake, Three Cheese Pasta Bake, Baked Ziti with Ricotta, Dark Cocoa Buttermilk Cake with Cocoa Mascarpone Frosting, Strawberry Slab Pie, Brownie Bottom Chocolate Pudding Pie,  Super Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies, Broccoli Bacon Mac n Cheese.

2. Diapers and Wipes

If your mama friend is using disposable diapers, she will never have enough. The trick is to stock up on the next two or three sizes as well so you're not suddenly stuck without a diaper that fits. But newborns poop a lot, at least my first one did. William would poop during a feeding, just as we finished, and then just before. So as you can imagine, we went through a lot of newborn sized diapers. Our favorite diapers and wipes are from Target, [affiliate links] specifically these diapers and these wipes.

3. Fun Makeup

New moms don't often get to pamper themselves so treat them to some pretty, new makeup and skincare to play with. While baby naps, mama can either nap or spend some time pampering herself and actually getting her hair and makeup done. I have lots of beauty recommendations you could pick up for your mama friend.

4. Nursing Friendly PJ's and Clothes

One of the things I didn't think about until after William was born was that I would need clothes that were breastfeeding friendly, especially those first few weeks when I was still getting the hang of things. Things like nursing camis and button-up pajamas will be a life saver for a new mom. The less she has to fiddle with in the middle of the night, the better. I recommend [affiliate link] these nursing camis and for PJs I love this nightgown (I actually own it and wear it now, it's super comfy) and [affiliate link] these pajamas are super cute.

5. A Helping Hand

One of the best gifts you can give is helping with housework. Simply doing a round of dishes or switching the laundry will be a big help! These tasks will be especially helpful if the mama you're visiting had a c-section, she won't be allowed to lift much or do a ton of bending. And don't ask if you can help, because she will most likely say no, just start cleaning.

If you can't afford a gift, your new mom friend will simply appreciate the company. It gets lonely and monotonous in those first few weeks and with crazy hormones, your pal will certainly appreciate seeing a smiling face. And don't forget a gift if there is an older sibling! To toddlers and young children babies can quickly lose their novelty because they don't play much and get a lot of attention. Something as small as a toy car or candy bar will be a thrill to the older brother or sister. What gifts have you given to friends that they've loved? What did you receive that you loved? Is there a gift you absolutely hated and would recommend people not give to others?
